Report: Exploration of Cycling Communities

As governments increasingly look to promote cycling, the role and potential of independent cycling communities have become a critical question. Yet, limited information is available on this vibrant sector.

In response to frequent inquiries, Tour de Force commissioned this essential exploratory qualitative study to map and analyze cycling communities both within the Netherlands and internationally.

Inside this report, you will find answers to key questions such as:

What are the diverse types of cycling communities currently operating? What are their core similarities, differences, structure, and long-term viability? How do they organize themselves, and what are their primary goals and activities? Through interviews with community organizing experts and extensive engagement with seventeen Dutch and seven international cycling communities, this publication offers profound insights into the essence of these groups. We explore how they form, the impact of their activities, and what they need to function over an extended period.

The study confirms a rich variety of active communities, all sharing the common element of bringing people together through conversation and collective riding. The final chapter presents concrete recommendations for government bodies seeking to support existing communities or establish their own.

This report is an indispensable resource for policymakers, urban planners, and cycling advocates interested in harnessing the motivational force of grassroots cycling initiatives.
